Dog Anal Gland Expression

Scooting, foul smell and licking at the hind end area? It could be evidence that your dog may have an anal gland problem. There are two small glands located internally on either side of the rectum. The purpose of these glands is to lubricate during a bowel movement. Sometimes, your dog may not be expressing these glands appropriately. We highly recommend having an adequately trained professional perform this procedure.

Should I drain my dog’s anal glands at home?

We do not recommend to express anal glands at home. Generally, anal glands are expressed internally, which we recommend having trained professionals do. Externally expressing the anal glands does not fully empty the gland and can cause further harm.

If my dog scoots on the carpet, does this mean their anal glands are impacted?

Although scooting the hind end on the carpet is a common symptom of full anal glands, we advise bringing your dog to the clinic for an examination as this may not always be the reason for scooting.
