Cat Fecal Exam
We offer in-house fecal analysis as well as more specialized fecal testing at our outside laboratory. Testing a fecal sample is an important part of your cat’s wellness or yearly examination as this can tell us if there is evidence of internal parasites.
What is a cat fecal parasite screen?
A fecal parasite screen is the examination of your cat’s feces under a microscope. It can identify ova (eggs) that are shed from parasites in your cat’s intestines. In-house testing can identify common parasites and heavy infestations. However, our outside laboratory offers even more accurate testing for a more diverse spectrum of parasites.
How is a fecal parasite screen performed?
We do in-house parasite screening by dissolving feces in a solution that causes ova (eggs) to rise to the surface. These are then transferred to a microscope slide to be examined and identified under the microscope.
What is the best method for collecting my cat’s stool?
Fresh fecal samples should be collected from your cat’s litter as soon as possible using a plastic bag and gloves. Try to avoid collecting excessive amounts of litter with the sample.
